Se analizan los desafíos que la era del conocimiento y la sociedad global le plantean a las instituciones de educación superior en general, y en particular a la universidad contemporánea, a fin de mantener vigente su misión y su proyección hacia el futuro. Como punto de partida se identifican, a grandes rasgos, las características de la economía abierta, sus implicaciones y algunas tendencias que están redefiniendo el rumbo de las naciones; así mismo, se exponen acciones emprendidas por organismos internacionales e instituciones académicas para enfrentar las presiones que provienen de ambientes altamente complejos y competitivos.

The challenges the era of knowledge and the global society make to the superior educational institutions are analyzed in general, and particularly the contemporary university, in order to keep current its mission and its projection toward the future. As a starting point are identified, in general terms, the features of the open economy, its implications and some tendencies redefining the path of nations; also, the actions international organizations and academic institutions started, to face the pressures originated from highly complex and competitive environments.
