Abstract
This essay discusses Friedrich Hölderlin’s approach to the mythical. The argument, made repeatedly in his correspondence, essays and poems, continually refined and corrected, is the following: expressed in poetic language, the myth allows restoring a world view that had been fragmented with the advent of the analytical stance at the turn of the century. Hölderlin’s approach to the mythical is not only influenced by the historical and intellectual context at the crossroads of the Frühromantik, the philosophy of Fichte, Schiller’s aesthetics and the French Revolution, but also by the childhood experiences, readings and encounters in Tübingen or Frankfurt. Finally, the essay highlights some mythical motives of his lyrical production.
