El demiurgo en el Timeo de Platón

Abstract

El Timeo es un diálogo platónico cuyas dificultades han dado lugar a explicaciones muy diversas sobre los temas allí abordados; entre ellos, el rol del demiurgo. La interpretación más difundida sostiene que el agente responsable de la generación tiene como modelo al mundo inteligible y, a partir de este, crea el universo. En el presente texto nos alejamos de esta interpretación tradicional y mostramos que, por el contrario, el demiurgo no es ontológicamente diferente a las Ideas, sino más bien inherente a ellas. Para ello, explicamos primero en qué consiste la labor demiúrgica en general y, en particular, la del filósofo. Posteriormente, indagamos por qué, a diferencia del filósofo, el demiurgo del cosmos no contempla un modelo externo a sí mismo, sino uno que le es inherente. En un tercer momento, subrayamos el carácter alegórico del diálogo, lo que nos permite entender por qué a pesar de la identificación entre el demiurgo y el modelo, Platón los mantiene diferenciados en el discurso.

The difficulties of the platonic dialogue Timeo have generated different explanations about many of the subjects disscused there; among them, the demiurge’s role. According to the most common interpretation, the responsible agent of generation has the intelligible world as a model of the universe. In this text, we refuse this traditional interpretation and intend to show that the demiurge is not ontologically different to the Ideas, but rather inherent in them. To pursue this purpose, we first explain what the demiurgic role in general involve, focusing in particular on the the philosophical one. Then, we discuss why the cosmos demiurge —unlike the philosopher— doesn’t contemplate an external model, but an inherent one. Finally, we emphasize the allegorical nature of the dialogue, that allows us to understand why, despite the identification between demiurge and model, Plato distinguishes them in his dialogue.
